Quanti anni passati in carcere lottando contro l’apartheid in Sud Africa ?

E mettermi in opera. Pazientemente, con fiducia e misericordia.

Come dice Seneca, e riporta Simone Perotti

fare verità, continuamente, dentro e intorno a me, acquisire autentica conoscenza;

Me ne libererò mai ?

(Gandhi)

The track of the Freedom in Darwin

Here, in the hostel in Darwin, i found a lot of Italians, for the first time since my leaving. I had a fever for some days, but it’s just a raison more to not doing too much. We made a community in the community, and it’s a holiday in the holiday. It’s warm, there is no one cloud, we breathe under the palms and the fans. The Sea wouldn’t be bad, here there are no crocodiles but there is some risk of jellyfish, deadly ones.

Voices of old friends come from Italy and give me the opportunity of thinking and writing about Freedom. I’ve a reverential fear in front at this word, I feel so ignorant and kid, not able to speaking about. Also, hearing different languages, I’m familiar to the relativity of the meaning of every word. But I’m not here to write an essay or to teach something to someone. I like the idea of sharing humility my thoughts and seeking, together, a more true truth. I’ll try to look at freedom as a diamond of different sides.

I am convinced that there is a close connection between freedom and truth, so close that sometimes I seem to coincide.
And The Truth, in fact, that will make you free.(Gv 8,32)
I know that I don’t know, i don’t have a complete and global knowledge; I accept that another has an opinion, a culture, a way of doing different from mine, I don’t judge and agree to question all my ideas, safety, ways to do. I retain as true only what they are really sure. I’m accurate in reporting to my sources, in the words, in the reporting of my experiences as they really happened.

On the other hand, being free also means to wonder why, how and what and not to accept uncritically everything that someone told.

In summary, I would say that being free is to have a humble, open, critical and never final approach to the truth of things, which is similar to the Socratic approach.

But if I have to think of a free person, I think to Nelson Mandela. How many years spent in prison fighting apartheid in South Africa? You can put chains on my wrists, shut in a cage, starve, kill my body but you can’t imprison my spirit, lock my thoughts.

I think to Gandhi, the salt march, thousands of people peacefully in line to receive the blows of the soldiers, other years in prison, a great nation released only with a non-violent actions. I have my own idea and not hide it, even if it hurts you, even if it hurts me. Being free means having the courage to bring their own truth, and be prepared to suffer the consequences.

Then there is the aspect that concerns all the dependencies, drugs, alcohol, sex, emotional dependency, craving for success, television. There's the part about the acceptance of the reality, of the pain. There's the part about listening, get in touch deeply with themselves. Being free means having the courage to look in the mirror without telling lies, recognize what I can’t do without it, recognize what scares me and, above all, recognize what are my true desires (not those of my parents, friends, girlfriends , teachers, society). It’s recognizing that me and just me I am the only responsible for my life, my happiness, my choices.

And put in place. Patiently, with confidence and compassion.

As Seneca says, and Simone Perotti as well,
there is no good wind for the sailor who doesn’t know where to go.
Being free means to speak the truth with ruthless sweetness.

This is the outline of the complex trace of freedom that I am following. Essentially, I would say that to me is composed of two main parts: doing truth, constantly, in and around me, acquiring true knowledge; uncovering this truth, having the courage to live it day by day.

I try to talk about it in the post I write, leaving digital breadcrumbs on my path. If it can be a starting point for someone else, well, if I write nonsense, sooner or later I will notice me. Probably it not emerge as trying to follow this track always puts me in a crisis, how many times I wonder what the hell I'm doing, if I'm wasting time, opportunity, what I want for myself, what is telling me my body and my life. For a moment it's panic, as if I was playing poker all I have and I was losing the game.

I know this is an old trap, the fear, the anxiety of having to do, wanting to be, to achieve the objectives. I’ll never be free ?

I'm not cool as Simone Perotti. I lack discipline, clarity, patience. I feel the risk that the gap becomes indifference. Often I risk to believe who he knows and, therefore, I don't leave space. I feel the risk to strive eagerly to an unreachable idea of myself. I feel that I'll have how much more I’ll dare. I feel that there are a lot of traps, temptations, swamps, crocodiles ready to bite the legs when you go to drink from the River. It’s dangerous.

But I also feel that, simply, that's life. On the road, people do elbows to give you a hand if I smile and I tend my own, I have experienced.

I breath. I restart from this, from my present. I am convinced that the most important thing is to keep my peace. That doesn’t mean putting our heads in the sand. It means having confidence in life, whatever it is. I have the tools to do it, so I will restart from this latest crisis to try to get back to my Peace.

I think, I hope, that one day I’ll look back and I’ll remember these moments, and I’ll regret that I have not enjoyed to the full view of the open sea of Freedom. But it is only because I can find true freedom inside, not outside of me.

Don’t run away in search of freedom when your biggest prison is within you. (Jim Morrison)
It is not worth having freedom if it does not imply to have the freedom to make mistakes. (Gandhi)

Assaggiando Kimberley

Into the wild” nelle orecchie.

Tasting Kimberley

Driving a beast tall 3.4 meters along a way that looks loosing itself into the infinite in the Kimberley region, with the eagles which open the track just over us and the soundtrack of “Into the wild” in the ears. Translating the Eddie Vedder’s songs and feeling to find a place at the bottom of the stomach. Skipping the kangaroo carcass on the ground, food for the inhabitants of the sky.

Fording a river with a 4wd while from a side the moon is rising in a pink sky and in the other side the shape of the trees on the hills cuts an orange background. An Australian lady who I told my project two hours before, married with an Italian 50 years ago, hugs me and wishes me good luck.

All this has no price, and it isn’t a hazard. I choose it.

I think to the days lived behind the bars in a office. I think to who ignored me, looked for me, desired me, to who went away without too many explications. I think to who has been disappointed, to who should have wanted me different, to who didn’t understand or didn’t wanted to understand. I think to me, lying on the mat, imagining a world over the ceiling while the everlasting years of the university.

All this hasn’t been useless. It brought me until here.

I’m not angry with anybody. I try to let the many mistakes made, the too many wrongs perceived, and to do my way. With simplicity.

My pants are worn, my sandals broken, my front relaxed. In the pictures I’m surprise seeing me full of energy.

I chart the course day by day. I know that every day is good to change everything. One more time.

Sentirsi a casa a Broome.

Sentirsi a casa. Cosa vuol dire ?

Cosa vuol dire sentirsi amato ?

Io dovevo partire.

Feeling at home in Broome

Running in the morning light on the desert and sunny Cable beach, with the wind scratching the skin and deep blue and play of light in the eyes. Running faster and faster, until to not feel anymore the feet splashing on the shore, like the horse of the IP advertisement. Let the thoughts go at full tilt, as if I have the long hair of some years ago. No price.

Feeling at home. What means ? For who is abroad is, sometimes, speaking own language, listening an old song, eating good food of own country. For me is having a place where you know that someone waits for you to give you a hug, or a kiss, a smile. A place where feeling loved. What means feeling loved ? For me it means feeling free to express myself in all what I am and knowing to be really listened. The physical place where this happened is at Valter and Franca’s home, who I greet with love.

I leaved for this travel also with the target of learning to feel at home everywhere and however. I don’t think is a so ambitious target, however I don’t still arrived it.

I’m still too much worried about what I’ll eat, where I’ll sleep, the imagine that I’ll give. I should be as a child, innocent, spontaneous, sure that someone will give me all I need. Or, better, that all that will arrive to me will be all that I need.

I became so worried to express my needs that i forget to receive all the other gifts that can arrive me in a day, but those don’t belong to the category of what I plan good for me. And I forget to be home for the others, and myself.
The truth is that I believe that everyone has to give himself the permit to feel at home, to feel free of being what he is. There will be always someone who doesn’t like you, and there will be someone else able to appreciate your spontaneity and your freedom.

There are places, as Summerhill, where there are the best conditions to learn to express yourself, to become what one is or could be. There are physical houses that look like prisons ma the true prison is the mind.

Do you know the story of the elephant ? The elephants are tied with a rope all their life. From cubs they are too weak to break it and they learn to think always like this, also when they, bigger, could break the rope easily. But you have to change way to think, and you have to discuss your safeties.

The first time that i thought to go away from home I was 11 or 12 years old. I planned to fill my bag with cracker and water and going to look for a job to the bar of the train station. Who knows why. Then I thought that it was more comfortable waiting to have more resources, more skills. I continued to think it for all the following years, with few flash of consciousness. At the end of the travel of the Corse by bike I should have wanted to change boat and going to look for a job in Marseille. At the end of the high school I should have wanted to go to Canada, working in some natural park. At the end of my travel in Costarica, I should have wanted to go ahead in Nicaragua.

In every place I’ve been I didn’t wanted to spend too much time to manage it, because I knew that those places were temporary. It’s like if I had prepared me all my life to this travel, but I had to wait until the 36 years to understand that it’s possible, and it isn’t so difficult, especially before the 30 years. The fact is that choosing always the easier solution makes you stupid, doesn’t make you bigger and, at the end, doesn’t give you fun. As Antonio says, putting himself in difficulty is the good way to learn and to have fun as well.

I don’t know for the others. I had to leave. I don’t know where I’ll go or what it will happen to me. I’ll try to do something of really good and I don’t care if I will not can. Every day that I’ll follow this street will make me a better person, and more happy. I don’t need anything more.

Broome Broome

Ieri siamo arrivati a Broome. Saluti e baci.

Broome Broome (english version)

Last night, in the Cable Beach Backpackers of Broome we slept in 5 in the 4-beds room, and I was the only one trying to sleep. All the others were busy in other business. If the law of attraction works, I can’t understand how. Or, maybe, it’s a strategy to training me to the equanimity at the sensations. Everything passes. But It’s hard for me distinguish between equanimity and indifference. Anicca.

In these 2 weeks we went up for more than 4000 km the west coast of Australia, sleeping in the campervan, with all the difficulties that this means, especially when between the others 2 a love affair starts. We stopped just before the sunset close to some remote beach, sometimes skipping some kangaroo, running to catch in some pictures a new show and at the same time to cook something before that the darkness came over us.
The sunrise surprised me often with the need to leave some of my biological stuff as memory for the next generations, some new pictures and a healthy “Good Morning Australia”. Day by day, the sky by night became more remarkable, temperature grew up, aboriginal presence as well, the outback red ground entered in everything, car, food, clothes.

I didn’t enjoyed too much in the national parks, I loved instead the beaches. Beautiful, wild, lonely, with a coral reef of more than 200 km and bloody sunsets. I fought with my panic to go underwater, I didn’t remembered to have a weakness which have so much to work.

It was so interesting confronting each other with the two guys who were with me, their tastes, their needs, their way to do, close in the need of sharing everything, just everything, for 2 weeks. The human beings are full of needs, me for first. I have never felt missing of Rocky as in these days, a trusty mate, with so really few needs, silent but ready to enthusiasm itself, which to be always sure about his love.

The richest person is who has less needs. Someone told it still thousands of years ago in the Classic Greece.

Tasting every moment but always ready to leave everything, without attaching it making anger or desire. Listening yourself deeply but always ready to accept everything happens, the pain as well. Doesn’t look easy.

We arrived in Broome yesterday. It’s the cold and dry season but it’s very hot, atmosphere is that relaxed of the tropical countries, fans on the ceiling, palms, hammock, very long beach. We have just the time to find an hostel, wash and return the car, that Evelyne receive a call. Her brother has decided to go. He left a letter to the family. Stop. Greetings and kiss.

It’s a shock for me. I imagine a liquid pain that arrives to her, that rises from the feet until filling the lungs. All the plans changed in a while. In 10 minutes the bus leaves to the airport, she’ll be in Switzerland tomorrow.

That I know is that all this is to accept. If She’ll accept this moment, even violent and bitter, if she’ll accept to live all this, slowly the pain will pass, otherwise she’ll bring with her for all her life and it will come out when less you expect it.

Ciao Perth, ricomincia l'avventura.

Guardare indietro a chi, a cosa ?

Goodbye Perth, the adventure restarts

I’m a bit tired. Last night was the first good night in the last week. I feel the sleep on my cheek, and I miss the sun, the wind on my skin. I feel alone as well, but it’s good like this.

I’m here, and I have this life to live where to be present moment by moment. Looking behind at who, at what ? I’m here, in the other part of the world, I wanted it and I knew that it has been like this, rather I imagined harder.

Every places is good, every people is good, I have just to find my corner of peace.

Finally I’m leaving. A bit of Australian adventure, a 4wd, some remote zone, a good party.

Siddharta, the experimenter

Take a piece of countryside just 2 hours drive from the city, there where factors who love loneliness contend to the red and poor outback ground the right to stay.

Imagine a rough couple of buildings laid out on rolling hills, where the sky is wide and the sunsets are all a postcard.

Listen to the voice of the wind in the trees, to the shrill verse of strange birds, the familiar roar of some cows nearby.

4 in the morning. The dawn is still far, the Southern Cross shines in the sky on time. The sound of a gong breaks the silence of the night, the vibration remains in the air for a long time, unreal. Little by little ghosts that move silently and decided, ignoring, appear and disappear all swallowed by the same building.

2 hours after a gong again. The light of the stars gave way to the long shadows of dawn and again silent figures moving from one building to another. Finally they start to breakfast. Porridge, cereals, baked apples, bread, butter, jam. No one speaks, the look is lost away to an imaginary horizon, it remains only the noise of rattling dishes and a kettle for hot water.

Imagine having to drive a Formula One car and should do to win while the Pamela Anderson of 20 years ago are doing you a job. You can't do it, the result is you go to continually bang on all sides. For me the first day was so, the mind that slipped by all parties, a blender of images and emotions, with no way out, while i was looking for a position where my back or the knees didn't hurt me.

Technically, the first three days we worked with Anapana, the technique where you observe the breath and you need to concentrate the mind. The rest of the time we worked with Vipassana, the technique where you observe- without reacting - the sensations in all parts of the body whose objective is to train the unconscious part of the mind to free from the attachment or the tendency of unconscious mind to react with uncontrolled anger or desire to bodily sensations.

The theory behind this technique assumes that when something happens to your conscious mind, starting from models that in mind, welcome an assessment by the incident. The body expresses this assessment through a sensation and the unconscious mind perceives and creates the feeling anger, if the feeling is unpleasant, or greed, if the feeling is pleasant. Anger and greed generate suffering and suffering generate unhappiness.

The technique, training the unconscious mind to understand that all sensations are temporary, trains it not to react or to be fair. Moreover, when the unconscious mind does not feed on anger or greed, brings old feelings to the surface from which - not reacting - you can leave. Eliminating the reaction to the feelings we are freed from suffering and therefore from the unhappiness.

According to the teacher Goenka, this technique was invented by Gotama the Buddha 2500 years ago and passed in its original form from master to disciple only in Burma, today's Myanmar, the country of origin of Goenka.

But beyond the technical details that probably can be found along with a host of other information in the website of Dhamma, these days were for me a great opportunity for reflection on me, spirituality, the concept of Truth.

As regards the technique, I am convinced of his goodness and good faith of those who teach. The fact that needs to be practiced 2 hours a day, plus a weekly community meeting, plus a full-immersion for 10 days once a year, strikes me a little bit. How many things could really help myself to practice 2 hours a day?

The fact is, it seems, everyone has their own truth. Every movement, faith, religion is convinced that their way is the best for themselves and, often, even for you. Someone tolerates or accepts that other routes may be good but in the end, its is really the best and this passes, it passes always.

My idea, whose I don't claim originality, is that as the only truly viable revolution is personal, you can only get a personal and experienced Truth.

I mean. Fine searching for the truth in what they say parents, teachers, friends, society, religion, but if this truth does not experience it in my life as a scientist would do, how can I be sure of his goodness? In particular, if I don't train to exercise my critical sense, how do I know who I am and what I want from life? Waiting for me to tell my father, the chairman of the board, the Pope? And if he tells you and you feel unhappy, who ask for explanations? And if you do everything they say you and you still feel unhappy what do you do? You resign yourself to unhappiness? Change dealer?

I have long looked for a person from which getting answers that I couldn't give me. In the end the best responses were of who did not respond at all. How can I ask another what is best for me? Can not find the answer? Beat your head, take risks, make a decision, taking responsibility, grow up.

Even I disagree with those who decry all institutions. The institutions are imperfect, sometimes harmful, but necessary. Have a duty to give stability to society, to be a reference to the human attempt to improve, its are a memory of this attempt. Who denigrates, often ends up in my opinion to assimilate the non-institutionalized thought, friends, media. For example, I met many people who believe that heterosexual and homosexual love should be considered in the same way, but they don't know why. It is obvious. For love is love. What's love?

If I meet someone and I seem he has a harmonious life, happy, I find light in her eyes, serenity, for me is a person from whom to learn something. But every person is special, it's a miracle, and as I do not expect necessarily what works for you works for me, so I expect to be able to learn something from everyone. I was thinking this during the course, watching a sunset, I realized that each one is unique, the golden light with which each of them illuminates the landscape will never be exactly the same. How much more each person!

I believe that many have read the famous book by Herman Hesse, Siddhartha, which tells a version of the life of Buddha. During her life Siddhartha experiences different spiritual experiences to reach enlightenment. This to me is a good way, the experimentation.

Like everything, with good sense. There are thousands of religions in the world, 120 different types of meditation, classical, free thinkers, philosophers, guru, so on and so forth. I am convinced that nothing happens by chance, that when you start the search the life puts you ahead of what you need and being able to choose is the first fruit of training in critical thinking.

Neither do I want to be a guru. I try to share the fruits of my experimentation, unpretentious. I think in an ideal world it would be great if everyone did this, and we discussed how and what to make experiments, as in the theory of test that you study in psychology, centered issues such as happiness, well being and quality of life, without measure with the measure displacement of the car or square metres of home ownership.

I wrote a story. Luisa and Antonia do the same work and have many things in common. One of them, however, is an experimentalist. It's just a story, with all the limitations of a story, first of all that I wrote it in speed but, I hope, with the opportunity to be illustrative of how I could change the lives of an experimentalist.

In the end the greatest gift I can make is to let your freedom. Get what you need from me and experiment it, if you want. On your way there is written only your name.

Fantastico.

Sydney (english version)

Sydney is the first true city that I meet in this travel. There is the sea, that it’s always a great gift, the buildings with a numbers of floors in double digit, different residential quarters in different styles, often surrounded of the green, Chinatown, the Spanish quarter, the Scottish one, the Italian one, the fish market.

There is a lot of people and a lot of movement, pubs, shops, but I never had the impression it’s too much, I never saw something like an interminable queue or smelled a smog cloud. Some evenings ago I let me go to the fast and dense people flow in Chinatown. People skipped me fluid as the waves slip over a boa in the middle of the Sea. Amazing.

There are wonderful parks.
I fell in love of the Royal Botanic Garden, on the Sea, with sight on the Opera House, with his huge, strange trees, the palms, the giant bats that just after the sunset have a show over the fountain, the corners of forest, fat plants or never seen, the strange and huge birds that I don’t know.

During the sunset, the city is extraordinary. The views are unbelievably pleasant, for me that should be a good reason for live in it

I know that, not so far, there are a lot of beaches that value a visit but I haven’t been yet. In some of these I know that you can’t swim because there are some sharks. The backpackers where I am it’s no so great, but some people tell me that the other aren’t better. Almost all the guys who I met worked, are working or they’re looking for a job. It seems that here it’s easy find a job and also with good money, but the work Is hard, the Australians don’t give presents.

Out of Sydney people live with a low profile. Old cars, simple clothes, houses no so luxury and I can’t understand if it’s a cultural or economic matter. Why to live in tows as Lightning Ridge, for example ?

Leopold, born in Austria, lived in Canada and finally came to this small town to help his mother who was dying, he told us that it’s a relaxed life. Leopold is a creative pensioned. He fix himself his antique Mercedes, he made himself a solar panel finding the instruction on internet, he enjoyed using Photoshop. “if you can do it, I can do it” is his philosophy.

But I don’t understand why such a smart person lives alone in this town stolen at the outback. The main activity is the opal mine, precious stones wealth mirage. Only really few people make money, the others try to live, invent ridiculous attractions for tourists and they wait the fresh of evening to exchange dreams at the pub.

There is too much dust, I’m uncomfortable. The desert is the place of the trial, not of the life ma everyone choose for himself. The beauty of the outback if that the land is flat until the horizon and the sky is wide until the imagination arrive, so the sunrise and the sunset are always special.

Me and Marco, a guy from Pesaro who i met in the backpackers, enjoy them in the bus, fighting with the sleep, in this trip to Lightening Ridge of an all-day of travel.

Yesterday night we had a dinner to Zeke, Australian lawyer who has lived in half world. Especially in New york and in Asia and now he lives alone in a big house in Victoria street, 5 minutes from our backpackers. We drank too much wine and cooked too much pasta, discussed about art, politics, travels, food and daily life. Probably it will be one of the best dinner of this year.

Instead yesterday afternoon i had a romantic moment with myself at the fish market. After I enjoined with smells, shapes, colors, I tasted some sushi on the wharf. It was the hour before the sunset and the sun was just coming out after a rain day. At the market the clerks were cleaning for closing, in the other side of the bay people were going home crossing the ANZAC bridge after a day of work, two pelicans was stealing the fish to the others birds. In the bay the plays of light in the water were pleasant, the ships moored were added a romantic touch to the frame. I listened my breath, I tasted all the flavor of the fish in the mouth, I was present at all what happened around me.

I wondered “who am i?” and “what am I doing?”. I think I lived most of my life the life of someone else, the life of who I thought you should expected from me. Now as well, when I am prey of a useless thoughts crowd, when I am in a condition of low energy, when I identify myself with my fear, I live the life of another.

Just listening my breath recharges me of energy, keeps me present on the stage of the Life, awakes me from the dream or, should be better to say, from the nightmare.

The Australasian

Non posso combattere contro me stesso.

The Australasian (english version)

What’s the Australasian ? It isn’t a disease, a contagious epidemic. I hope that it is one day, I mean, I wish a lot of other people follow a way as the mine, if my way is good.
Australasian is an idea, it’s me at this moment or, better, the direction that I’m following. It’s also the name of the insurance plan that I did with Uni-care.

After New Zealand, my travel plan starts from Sydney, another sea town that I like very much and it will go ahead to Perth the first days of May. Then in some way I’ll go up to north and finally to west, in a not defined time.
It will be less travel and more experience, tangle of crossings of life and signs in the soul.

I believe that everyone is what he think or what he has the braveness to be. I know I’ll always keep with me the fear, and all his derivates, as Jesus in the Getsemani. I can’t fight with it, because fighting I give it strength and, moreover, it lives inside me. I can’t fight with myself.
What I can do is to accept it, as a not polite roommate, and to believe that Light lives inside me as well, to believe that the Life will take care of me also in the most deep hell, in all the deaths that I’ll choose to live as well.

I love the Light. I love the brightly morning, with the sun low over the horizon, especially after a night cold or rich only of doubts.
The light don’t leave space to the doubt. The light is hope, is complete confidence, is the Life that flow in your veins with a lot of bubbles.
I loved the desert and silent nights but now I turn, the Australasian chooses the light at full time. He chooses yellow, orange and red, the colors of the fire for a new time of Light.

Good Easter of Resurrection!
